Group members walking through an open plaza

The Pace & Community Manifest

Walking together requires shared understanding. Here we outline tempos, etiquette, and the atmosphere we cultivate on every outing.

"The pace of a group is not the average of its members — it is an agreement renewed at every fork in the path."

Group walking is inherently social. These principles help every participant know what to expect before lacing up.

Three Tempos of Movement

Each scheduled walk is assigned a tempo. Choose the one that matches how you want to spend your time outdoors.

Slow Tempo

The Contemplative Drift

Extended pauses at points of interest. Conversations unfold without urgency. Average distance: 2–3 miles over 2.5 hours.

Ideal for photography, sketching, and detailed observation of surroundings.

Moderate Tempo

The Forager's Crawl

Steady forward movement with regular but brief stops. The group covers more ground while maintaining awareness of flora, architecture, and terrain.

Average distance: 3–5 miles over 2 hours.

Fast Tempo

The Stride Circuit

Continuous movement with short regrouping intervals. Suited for those who enjoy covering distance while still sharing the experience with others.

Average distance: 5–7 miles over 2 hours.

Field Notes from Walkers

"I joined a moderate-tempo urban walk last autumn. What surprised me was how much I noticed — not despite the group, but because of it. Someone would point out a detail, and suddenly ten pairs of eyes were looking at the same cornice."

— Participant reflection, October session

"The slow tempo walks changed how I move through my own neighborhood. I started pausing at corners I used to rush past."

Shared Expectations

These guidelines keep group walks welcoming and predictable for everyone involved.

Arrive Prepared

Wear appropriate footwear and bring water. Weather-appropriate layers are recommended for all outdoor sessions.

Respect the Pace

Each walk has an assigned tempo. If you need to step away, inform the walk leader so the group is aware.

Stay Present

Phones on silent during walks. Photography is welcome at designated pause points.

Leave No Trace

Pack out what you pack in. Stay on marked paths and respect private property boundaries.
